Context
The Influence:
It was a war in Japan and new technology was wreaking havoc in the heavily involved Japan in the European wars efforts. The culture that had previously dominated Japan was leaving its route. As a compromise to help with this ever-increasing problem, Doraemon was created. The show showed how tech and humans could be friends, despite the technological developments that were contributing to the war.
The Creation:
Hiroshi Fujimoto was in search of a new idea for his new manga. Three incidents that happened to Fujimoto shaped the character’s creation. He tripped over his daughter's toy, heard a neighborhood catfight, and he had been wishing for a machine to help him come up with a new manga concept (Min).
The Show
Because of the historical influence, the manga revolved around the themes of youth empowerment. Moreover, it proved to be a living example of how technology can be humans’ friend instead of the source of its destruction. The Atomic Bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki during 1945 had created a negative stigma surrounding technological advancement, in general. But, the release of the manga in 1969 was a step at alleviating the issue
Ultimately, Doraemon became the “most popular comic and animation series in postwar Japan” (Craig).
